Yoga Anytime Mobile Cross-Platform App

CASE STUDY
Yoga Anytime
One of the ways Yoga Anytime could help bring Yoga to more people was to create a cross-platform app that allowed both iOS and Android users to download and watch videos.

TAKEAWAYS
Yoga for all
Based on customer service feedback, troubleshooting video playback issues was unresolved for Android users who did not have the option of downloading videos from an app.
Who are our customers?

According to user interviews, video observations, traffic pattern data, usability testing and competitive analysis, each personas’ needs were defined as:
New Customers & Beginners
— Customers delayed when having to select from a menu as their first experience.
— They had trouble deciding what video to watch and felt less overwhelmed browsing by shows (seasons and episodes) than by recently added videos.
— They suggested adding features that were available because they did not see those features.
Long-Term Subscribers
Long-term subscribers were resistant to changing the location of content and navigation.
All Customers
— All customers wanted the best video playback experience possible.
‍— They primarily navigated our content by browsing.
‍— They needed a more intuitive way to delete downloaded videos.
‍— They expected their recommended content to refresh every time they visited the app.
Iterations

I learned while testing the Shows List, that customers did not have a preference or expectation for darker backgrounds even though it is a more common experience on video streaming platforms. Customers were able to scan rows of content more easily than tabbed navigation. Customers wanted to bypass swiping left on each row to “see all”. They wanted an option to skip forward to a full list of each category. On the lists without dividers, customers had a hard time telling whether the title belonged to the row above or below.
Solution

Screens were documented in a pattern library which helped identify gaps in consistency. Our customers had a new browsing experience from the homepage where they could navigate by show and watch in a season and episode format. The navigation structure remains familiar to long-term subscribers but the updated UI follows expected navigational patterns. Customers could complete tasks in multiple ways to meet the needs of different approaches used by Android and iOS users, as well as, different levels of familiarity with their devices.
